Digital Publishing 3

After digital publishing 1 and 2, I have tried to multiple images by putting words on them and making it moves. But it makes me wonder how it will be, if it just image itself. What can I do to make it reflect on what I want to express without adding words or making it moves.

This is a picture of Guangzhou, and here is where I grow up. But it’s not “when” I grow up. Guangzhou is in the south part of China, Historically, it never have been a political centre like Beijing or Shanghai did, this is probably the reason why most of the Guangzhou’s people doesn’t care for modernisation.

And this is the Guangzhou when I grow up. This picture captures a normal daily life in Guangzhou. And the architectural complex in the picture is the most identical feature of Guangzhou names “Qi Lou”. The history of “Qi Lou” can trace back to ancient China, the structure of “Qi Lou” perfectly compromises the Warm-wet climate in Guangzhou and it’s financial status as one of the most important harbour city of China because the ground floor of “Qi Lou” are use for business like shop or restaurant and its ventilation.

Since 1990s, because of modernisation and subway building, “Qi Lou” have become a stumbling block and being dismantled. Nowadays, “Qi Lou” can only be seen in a few area. And it becomes a sorrow in many people’s heart. People like me, who grow up in this city and see its change.

To show this emotion, I put to picture next to each other and make the picture of “Qi Lou” upside down and turn it into black and white.( In Chinese tradition, black and white pictures refer to death or something that is no more or gone) Last but not least, I make it blurry because the memory of “Qi Lou” is kind of fading through time.

Digital Publishing 2

After Digital publishing 1 which is a meme, in digital publishing 2, I decided to make a Gif.

The Graphics Interchange Format, or known as Gif  is a bitmap image format that was developed by a team at the online services provider CompuServe led by American computer scientist Steve Wilhite on June 15, 1987. Every since that, it has become a most popular used media through internet.

Climate change is a global issue that is already too serious to ignore. Hurricane, mountain fire, glacier melting, sandstorm… Extreme weather happens more and more often, but still there are a lot of people not taking this serious.Since Gif is one of the most popular media forms, I decided to make a Gif that is about Climate change, hopefully it can help to draw more attention.

First, I used VUE which is a shout video editing app to make the short video I found online together.

Second, I used the website GIPHY to generate this Gif.The moving image help create an anxious mood to infect audiences’ emotion. The ” THIS IS SERIOUS” text all in capital and red can easily capture audiences’s attention and clear the motive of this Gif.

Multimodality engages the technical of two or more modes and the creations of feelings, emotions, embodied reactions.

Communication modes are the ways that we present, deliver, transport information. There are three main modes — visual modes, sonic modes and interactive modes.

This is the original picture I captured from a soccer game I watched on live website few years ago.

The figure in the picture with his hands cover his face is the coach of the losing team. A soccer game usually last for 90 minuets and the game in this picture had a 4 minuets injury time. If it’s a draw, each team have 1 point. But at 92:55, the other team scored a goal and toke 3 points, left the losing team with 0 point.

The focus is on the figure and blur the background brings out the main character.

And the text ” WHEN YOUR ASSESSMENT IS GOIN G TO DUE…” highlighted by bright yellow colour and text ” AND YOU CAN’T EVEN UNDERSTAND THE BRIEF” highlighted by red colour compliment the figure and the “last minute ” situation.

What is Digital Literacy?

Digital literacy is becoming a common skill to most of the people now in 21st century. Though may not everybody realises this.

Digital literacy is the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate and create information using digital technologies. In a more simple way, it is a skill we use to manipulate and transform digital media.

Different than traditional literacy, digital literacy is much more diversified. Instead of finding information, reading and prose composting, because of the power of internet, information is easy to be found.People vetting the information online, and skimming the reliable sources then they can compo it in multi way like information design, data visualisation even like blogging.

‘We need to extend the notion of ‘media literacy’ beyond the defensive notion of ‘critical reading’… [to] ‘digital literacy’ – a form of hands-on productive expression… using multiplatform devices to ‘write’ as well as ‘read’ electronic media’ (Hartley 2009, p. 21)

There is one thing that is important when people trying to become digitally literate is how to recognise. Digital world is a free and borderless space. It is a advantage and disadvantage at the same time. People can feel free to compose online but, it also make the information in digital world unreliable. This is why having the skill of digital literacy so important.

Digital literacy integrate our day and day life. When you send a e-mail, when you summit an assignment online and when you use search engine effectively. All this action without knowing, you already becoming digitally literate.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
